About Me
Having worked within children's care services in the public and charity sectors for nearly 35 years, the importance of reading and the magic and power of books and education has always been something I have promoted. So when a rare and chronic health condition forced me to leave a career I loved and to re-evaluate my life, the idea of the Personalised Story Cushions was naturally born out of the creative therapy I undertook and the knowledge and passion I had about children's welfare and development.
It soon grew into my small business, and today I have a range of over 60 handmade Story Cushions, designed to engage children in exploring books and sharing stories. I include a free book with each of my cushions - many of which have found their way into schools, nurseries and foster homes, as well as being found in bedrooms and playrooms across the country and even abroad.
I have expanded my range to include Gift Cushions, co-ordinating Greeting Cards and children’s decor, which is all handmade by me and can be personalised to add that extra special touch.
I have also developed a range of Reading Cushions for adults - paired with a free book and carefully curated Gift Sets, they make unique and personal gifts, designed to encourage time out and to promote moments of mindfulness.
As well as selling online, in retail outlets and at shows and events, I have recently begun to collaborate with other entrepreneurs and am developing a wholesale strand to my business, as well as planning to launch an exciting new subscription service.
You will also find here, a small selection of Fairtrade-sourced, felted items made by hand, in Kathmandu, Nepal. I like to promote these products, as they are made by an organisation that provides fairtrade jobs for a number of disadvantaged women and single mothers. Their mission is to combat urban poverty. Purchasing supports skills-training and income-generation programmes for many female heads-of-households living in and around the capital and provides access to education for their children, fostering a sense of independence in an otherwise marginalised population.
